“Urdu in 30 Days” fulfils its claim and the learners’ expectation of being equipped with the required basic knowledge of the Urdu script in a month’s time. The book provides the readers with a strong foundation in the language on which they can structure their future advanced study of the language and the rich literature available in it. A total of 50 lessons systematically divided into a well designed 30 day plan comprises the discussion of all letters of the Urdu alphabet and their nuances along with lessons on special characters like ‘Tashdeed’, ‘Tanveen’, ‘Zer-e-Izaafat’ etc., inserted in the exact place in the scheme of learning. The deliberate shuffling of ‘Huroof-e-Tahajji’ seems to have a rationale that systematically and logically observes a pattern of step by step understanding of letters that can be combined to form words gradually leading to formation of short sentences and finally culminating into the ability to read short paragraphs from the prose pieces given at the end of the book. The Glossary at the end adds to the learners’ vocabulary new words with their exact pronunciation and meaning. Multicoloured presentation of the content enhances the aesthetic appeal of the book. The learner of Urdu who follows the scheme of learning suggested by the Author in this book can easily grasp the basics and learn to read and write. The Author, an Urdu scholar and former Lecturer in Urdu at NDA (National Defence Academy) deserves appreciation and congratulations on coming out with a comprehensive book for the beginners of Urdu learning. As a person involved in the making of this book, I would recommend the readers to study this book along with the other book by the same Author,“Learn Urdu Script” that corresponds with the lessons in the former and serves as a primer and a workbook for practice in written Urdu. Learning the two books together would certainly offer an enriching experience and would open an avenue to the greater riches of the Urdu language.
