It is not easy to read and assimilate properly the epoch-making three volume book, CAPITAL, the Magnum Opus of Karl Marx. It was more difficult to prepare, for Rebati Barman an abridged version of this book way back in 1938 while he was in British jails and in a fragile state of health. Rebati Barman, a brilliant student of Calcutta University and a pioneer to make Marxism popular in Bengal, and also a long time political prisoner, wrote this Bengali version intended for the ordinary literate people. This is the pioneering work in India to make a summary of the ideas of the book in a lucid manner. However as it was written in chaste Bengali language (Sadhu bhasha), it required after more than eight decades to be edited in the currently prevalent language(Chalitbhasha). The editing by Dr. Dipak Nag has remained faithful to the original book of Rebati Barman.
